Single Stamp (hyōshi)

Stamps can be performed singly, doubly, or in sequence of four to sixteen. While single and double stamps fall in the category of Structural patterns, sequences of stamps constitute a Mimetic pattern.

Most dances start with a single or double stamp, and most Noh performances conclude with a double stamp. Moreover, some single stamps are also integrated into extended patterns, such as the Large zig-zag (ōzayu).

For feminine roles, the Single foot stamp (hyōshi) is performed with the foot slowly rising just above the ankle and gently dropping, creating a soft beat. Although, the Right foot stamp (migi hyōshi) and Left foot stamp (hidari hyōshi) can be performed in Martial mode, we show them here performed in feminine mode only.
