Take the Corner with Extended Fan (sumitori ōgi kazashi)

The Take the Corner pattern (sumitori hidari e ōmawari) is a striking sequence of kata, bringing the dancer to the stage’s front-right corner, where he extends the fan, then pivots and performs the Large Left Circle (hidari ōmawari) towards backstage.

For the extended fan, the dancer uncurls his fingers from the nestled position and extends the fan in front of his hand, exposing its back side. A comparison with the Take the Corner pattern (sumitori hidari e ōmawari) illustrates how arm motion can be dramatically emphasized when the fan is open.
